As of December 2020, the main calculation and testing meter used for children in the UK is being discontinued and they will need to use an app. This means individual mobile phones for even 5-year-old children in school.
Tesco Mobile kindly offered a number of refurbished iPhone 7s which will be given to newly diagnosed children of families that cannot afford to buy an additional phone for their child (usually primary school children)
They will now be able to have the app available to calculate all Insulin doses to manage their diabetes well during school hours and use additional functions like continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to further improve glucose management if applicable. CGM needs a phone to transmit information to.
Dr Sejal Patel, Locum Paediatric Consultant is delighted with the kind donation as it will make such as difference to our young patients.
Strict criteria will be set to ensure only families that will truly benefit from this generous gift receive it – we aim to ensure all children in our care, with a life changing diagnosis of type 1 diabetes , can manage glucose levels well regardless of the family income.
