We were so happy to invite KatCanDo in last week to meet with Dr Hisham Osman, Consultant General, Oncoplastic & Melanoma Surgeon and present him and the department with a new scanner they had fundraised for.

With KatCanDo’s generous donation we were able to fund a portable, single probe, ultrasound piece of equipment together with associated software.

The equipment will be used in Frimley’s Breast Care Unit. The probe can be attached to a clinician’s mobile device for immediate display on the screen.

The new piece of equipment will allow the team to assess lumps more quickly which is such a huge positive for patients.

Mr Hisham Osman, Consultant Breast Surgeon said “This allows us as a department to rapidly assess symptomatic lumps as a bedside tool. This swifter assessment will enable faster reassurance of the benign nature for the majority of patients which is, of course, very positive. The scanner will be of use in the rapid assessment of patients presenting in the emergency setting with infection, allowing us to differentiate between cellulitis and abscesses. The abscesses can then be drained under ultrasound guidance using the scanner. This scanner will also help in a theatre setting with more accurate targeting of lumps in Lumpectomies, so it really is a very versatile piece of equipment KatCanDo have kindly gifted us.”

KatCanDo have fundraised for Frimley Health since 2004 and have raised an incredible £160,000, allowing us to buy equipment which has improved patients’ lives.
