Welcome to Art and Health in our Trust
Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust are committed to maintaining a positive healing environment for patients, staff and visitors through the inclusion of art at our Trust.
The first therapeutic colouring book created at Frimley Health Trust
A year long project created between Frimley Health Arts and Farnborough College of Technology has come to a fruition with a 14 page booklet published just for our patients across the trust. Inspired by a matron asking for colouring books, the Arts Manager, Emma Carr approached Farnborough College of Technology with a brief to design linear studies for patients to colour in.
After presentations and consultations, fourteen wonderful designs were submitted and a book was published by Frimley Health Charity. The colouring books have already been used in the dementia wards by the activity nurses and are proving to give the patients a form of communication, engagement and grounding. Elderly care, cancer and pre-operative wards have been issued so far with more to now be rolled out.
Students were invited to meet Phillipa Hooton Head of Nursing Medicine and received their own copy of the books. In return, they each donated a pack of pens! Their tutors Jane Habgood and Charlie Gould said the project really focused the students and they were proud to be part of this amazing project.
This has been a rewarding project that will continue in years to come.
We are currently looking for a sponsor to cover the cost of printing and the supply of colouring pens and pencils. The name or logo of the sponsor can be added to the books to recognise their support.

Organ Donation Memorial artwork created by Farnborough Sixth Form in September 2018
To celebrate the NHS70 Birthday, we worked with Wexham School and Farnborough College of Technology to create what the NHS means to the students. We were so amazed by the level of skill they showed and the commitment to the project-done mostly outside of college hours.
The work is currently on exhibition at Frimley and Wexham Park.
“It was through this hard work that the whole project was such a success. Melanie and I really enjoyed working with you all, and I hope that this project will lead to more partnership working between the Trust and the colleges”. Mike Stone JP Voluntary Services Manager
A 2008 Arts and Health policy prospectus concluded: “Arts Council England, The Department of Health and many leading healthcare experts firmly believe that the arts have an important part to play in improving the health and wellbeing of people in many ways.”
Recent clinical studies show that placing artworks within a healthcare environment can;
- reduce levels of anxiety
- reduce levels of depression and stress
- reduce patient’s length of stay within the hospital
- reduce the use of some oral medications
- improve communication between patients and health care professionals.
Art at Frimley Health NHS Charity
Our Art Programme is aimed at improving the visual environment for patients of all ages, staff and visitors. The Arts Committee focuses on engagement with both the local and wider communities. We have recently worked with local artists, art students and camera clubs on a variety of projects. This will continue at all sites within the Trust.
Donations to support our Arts Charity Fund allows us to enhance our healing environments within our health care environment. These are through artist commissions, purchasing of artwork, participatory arts activities and music in hospitals. The art team work with staff, visitors and local communities to build a portfolio that is specifically created for the needs of patients.
